Hotels here are strung along the coast road with long gaps between them, so the resort you pick effectively decides where you eat and what you can reach on foot — there is no town centre to walk to. Port Ghalib, next to the airport, is the closest thing to a hub, with a marina, shops and restaurants.
The reason to come this far south is the water. Elphinstone is an offshore pinnacle for experienced divers; Samadai is regulated with restricted zones so the dolphins are not disturbed; and Abu Dabbab and Marsa Mubarak are shallow bays reachable from the beach, where turtles and dugongs graze on the seagrass. Wadi El Gemal covers both the mountains and a stretch of coast and reef, and is visited with a guide.
