Ain Sokhna

Best time: March–May and September–November

العين السخنة

Ain Sokhna is the closest stretch of Red Sea coast to Cairo, roughly a two-hour drive east on the Cairo–Suez road. It is built out of gated resort compounds and chalet villages rather than an old town, which is why it works as a weekend escape rather than a week-long trip. The water is calm and shallow close to shore, so it suits families and short stays more than serious diving.

About the place

About Ain Sokhna

Almost everything in Ain Sokhna sits along a single coastal road, so the practical question is which compound you are staying in rather than which neighbourhood — there is no walkable town centre connecting them. Most chalets are privately owned and rented by the night, and facilities such as pools, beach access and restaurants belong to the compound, not to the public beach.

Because it is a drive rather than a flight, Ain Sokhna fills up on Thursday evening and empties on Saturday. Mid-week stays are noticeably quieter and cheaper. Summer midday heat is severe with little shade away from the resorts, which is why spring and autumn are the more comfortable windows.
