Luxor

Best time: November–March

الأقصر

Luxor is built over ancient Thebes, with the Nile splitting it into an East Bank of standing temples — Karnak and Luxor Temple — and a West Bank of tombs and mortuary temples, including the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari. Most West Bank sites open early because the heat becomes serious from late morning, and the dawn balloon flights leave from the same side. November to March is the comfortable window.

About Luxor

Plan Luxor by bank, not by day. The East Bank sights sit inside the modern city — Luxor Temple is in the middle of it, Karnak is 3 km north along the corniche — so they can be done on foot or by short taxi ride whenever you like. The West Bank needs a crossing plus transport between widely spaced sites, which is why it is normally a single early start.

Entry to the Valley of the Kings covers a rotating set of open tombs, with Tutankhamun, Seti I and Nefertari ticketed separately. Between the two banks, Luxor holds a large share of the ancient monuments that survive anywhere in Egypt, so two full days is a realistic minimum rather than a generous one.
