Hurghada

Hurghada is the largest city on Egypt’s Red Sea coast and the capital of the Red Sea Governorate, stretched along roughly 20 km of shoreline from the old quarter of El Dahar through Sekalla to the southern hotel strip. Its international airport makes it the usual entry point for the whole coast, and day boats run constantly to the Giftun islands and the reefs offshore. It is a working city with resorts attached rather than a resort with a city attached.

Marsa Alam

Marsa Alam is the southern end of Egypt’s developed Red Sea coast, roughly 270 km below Hurghada and served by its own international airport. It is a diving destination first: Elphinstone Reef offshore, the Samadai reef where spinner dolphins rest during the day, and the seagrass bays around Abu Dabbab where green turtles and dugongs feed. Development is thin and spread out along the coast road, and Wadi El Gemal National Park begins just inland.
